- Living rooms. Place the front legs of the sofa and of both flanking chairs on the rug, which visually pulls the seating group together, and leave 12 to 18 inches of floor showing at the walls, or up to 24 inches in a larger room. In a room of about 12 x 15 feet or larger this reads as generous. In a smaller room a 9 x 12 crowds the walls and an 8 x 10 sits better. Keep main walkways of about 30 to 36 inches clear.
- Dining rooms. A chair pulled back from the table travels about 24 inches and should still have all four legs on the rug. A 9 x 12 comfortably serves a table seating eight, rectangular up to about 40 x 84 inches.
- Bedrooms. Laid crosswise under a king bed (76 inches wide), a 9 x 12 shows about 34 inches on each side and extends past the foot, so you step onto wool rather than floor. Under a queen, the margin grows to about 42 inches.

Handmade 9 x 12 rugs often vary by several inches, and sometimes by a foot, because they were woven to the loom rather than to a catalogue size and their measurements were rounded to the nearest foot when sold.

- Measure the room wall to wall in both directions, and note fireplaces, radiators, built-ins and door swings.
- Subtract the border. A room of 12 x 15 feet with 18 inches of floor on every side takes a 9 x 12 exactly.
- Tape the outline at 108 x 144 inches, then place the furniture: front legs of the seating on the tape, or the dining table centered with chairs pulled out.
