Sultanabad Rugs

Persian Sultanabad rugs are celebrated Persian carpets that originate from the historic weaving center of Sultanabad (today’s Arak) in central Iran, rising to international prominence in the late 19th century as demand for Persian rugs swept across Europe and America. These hand-knotted treasures are distinguished by their expansive floral and vine motifs, elegant palmettes, and all-over designs that create a sense of graceful movement and balance across the field.

Unlike some traditional Persian styles, Sultanabad carpets often feature larger scale patterns and softer, muted color palettes — such as warm rusts, pale blues, ivories, and earthy greens — reflecting both classic Persian aesthetics and the tastes of the Western markets that helped popularize them. Woven with high-quality wool and rich natural dyes on a cotton foundation, these rugs combine artistic heritage with enduring craftsmanship, making them sought-after both as antique collectibles and stylish centerpieces in today’s interiors.

Antique Persian Sultanabad rugs are celebrated for their sophisticated artistry, featuring large-scale, flowing floral designs and a distinctive, softer palette of rich earthen tones. Woven in the Arak region of Persia, these luxurious antique rugs often utilize natural dyes, giving them a unique depth and luminosity; discover more about the history and characteristics of Sultanabad weavings.
