How do I measure a large room for an antique rug?
Measure the floor area you want the rug to cover, not just the walls, and then work back to a rug size. Follow these steps:
- Measure the room wall to wall in both directions, and note fixed features such as fireplaces, built-ins, radiators and door swings.
- Decide how much floor should show around the rug. In a large room, a band of visible floor on every side frames the rug. Keep the band roughly even on all sides.
- Mark the rug outline on the floor with painter’s tape at the size you are considering. Walk around it and place the main furniture.
- Check the furniture. In a living room, decide whether the front legs of sofas and chairs sit on the rug. Under a dining table, allow room for chairs to be pulled out without catching the edge.
- Check doors and thresholds. Make sure doors clear the rug, especially if the pile is thick.
- Compare with measured sizes, not nominal ones. A “12 x 18” antique may be a few inches off in either direction.
