A 10 x 14 rug is 10 feet wide and 14 feet long, which is 120 x 168 inches, 305 x 427 cm or 3.05 x 4.27 metres. Sizes are written width first, so the 10 is the short side. It is the largest of the three common room sizes and the point where a rug begins to be called oversize in much of the trade.
The nearest common European size is 300 x 400 cm, about 9 ft 10 in by 13 ft 1 in. Which rooms does a 10 x 14 rug fit?
A 10 x 14 fits living rooms of about 14 x 18 feet and larger, dining rooms with a table for ten to twelve, and large primary bedrooms. The honest test is whether a 9 x 12 would look marooned. The practical rules for each room:
- Living rooms. In a room of about 14 x 18 feet, a 9 x 12 leaves a wide band of bare floor and the seating starts to read as an island. A 10 x 14 closes that gap and lets all four legs of the sofa and flanking chairs sit on the rug, with 18 to 24 inches of floor showing at the walls. Keep main walkways of about 30 to 36 inches clear.
- Dining rooms. A chair pulled back from the table travels about 24 inches and must keep all four legs on the rug, so the rug should be about 4 feet wider and longer than the table. A 10 x 14 serves a table seating ten or twelve.
- Bedrooms. Laid crosswise under a king bed (76 inches wide), a 10 x 14 shows almost 4 feet on each side, enough for the nightstands to stand on the rug as well, and it extends well past the foot for a bench.

Measure the floor you want covered, subtract an even border, and check the delivery route as carefully as the room. Step by step:
- Measure the room wall to wall in both directions, and note fireplaces, radiators, built-ins and door swings.
- Subtract the border. A room of 14 x 18 feet with 24 inches of floor on every side takes a 10 x 14 exactly.
- Tape the outline at 120 x 168 inches, then place the furniture with all legs on the tape, or center the dining table with the chairs pulled out.
