Handmade 12 x 15 carpets commonly vary by a foot or more from the nominal size. Large carpets were woven by hand to the loom rather than to a catalogue size, and their measurements were rounded to the nearest foot when sold, so "12 x 15" covers a range.

How do you measure a room for a 12 x 15 rug?

Measure the floor you want covered, subtract an even border, and plan the delivery as carefully as the layout. Step by step:

1. Measure the room wall to wall in both directions, and note fireplaces and hearths, radiators, built-ins, columns and door swings.
2. Subtract the border. A room of 16 x 19 feet with 24 inches of floor on every side takes a 12 x 15 exactly.
3. Tape the outline at 144 x 180 inches and place all the furniture inside it.
