A late 19th-century Persian Sultanabad carpet in oversized format, woven around 1890 and measuring approximately 427.0 × 579.2 cm (about 14’0″ × 19’0″). The design centers on a small-scale repeating medallion motif over a saturated red ground, set against a moss-green border — a less common color pairing among Sultanabads of this era and one that gives the piece a more grounded, almost garden-like character than the more familiar red-and-blue combinations.
Sultanabad was a major weaving center in west-central Persia in the late 19th century, and carpets of this size were typically commissioned for European and American homes through agents like the Manchester firm Ziegler & Co. At nearly 14 by 19 feet, this rug is suited to a true ballroom-scale dining or living room.
