Antique Afshar Persian Blue 1890s Rug, Circa Date: 1890s. This exceptional example of Afshar weaving dates to the late 19th century, representing the sophisticated geometric artistry of the nomadic Qashqai and Afshar tribes of Southern Persia. Its enduring quality and historical significance place it firmly within our curated collection of antique rugs.
The field is dominated by a rich, saturated indigo, providing a dramatic backdrop for the complex tribal iconography. The masterful use of natural dyes is evident in the vibrant secondary hues—rust, terracotta, and subtle rose—that lift the design from the deep blue color rugs background, creating visual depth and warmth.
Characteristic of Afshar production, the central composition features a highly stylized, dense arrangement of repeating octagonal and cruciform motifs. This intricate, non-directional pattern is a classic example of an allover rugs design, ensuring visual interest from every angle without relying on a central medallion.
The rug displays a beautiful patina consistent with its age, where the wool has softened and the colors have mellowed over more than a century. Its dimensions categorize it perfectly among small scatter size rugs, making it an ideal accent piece for an entryway, bedside, or study, offering a powerful statement of tribal history.
Condition: Good.
