Antique Sultanabad Persian Knotted Rug, Circa Date: 1890s. This exceptional example of 19th-century Persian weaving represents the finest qualities sought in antique rugs, showcasing the robust structure and grand scale typical of the Sultanabad region’s output during the late Qajar dynasty.
The field is dominated by a rich, oxidized madder red, which has mellowed over time into a complex palette featuring deep rust and subtle hues of coral. This sophisticated color variation, achieved through natural dyes, provides the rug with its remarkable depth and historical patina.
A highly stylized, open pattern fills the field, centered around an imposing navy medallion and complementary pendants. The overall composition relies on large-scale, curvilinear designs, characteristic of classic floral rugs that prioritize visual impact over minute detail.
Framed by a wide, midnight blue primary border featuring scrolling vines and oversized palmettes, the design maintains a powerful presence. Measuring approximately 11 by 9 feet, this piece functions perfectly as one of the most desirable room size rugs, anchoring a sophisticated living space with its historical gravity and enduring aesthetic appeal.
Condition: Good.
