Antique Malayer Room Size Wool Rug, Country of Origin: Iran / Persia, Circa Date: 1890s. This exceptional late 19th-century weaving exemplifies the robust character of village production from the Hamadan region. Malayer rugs, prized for their durable construction and saturated natural dyes, offer a compelling blend of tribal vitality and formal structure, making them highly sought-after antique rugs.
The central field is dominated by a deep indigo ground, providing a dramatic backdrop for the stylized Tree of Life motif rendered in vibrant madder reds and rich ochre. While the overall effect is densely patterned, the underlying structure adheres to a sophisticated, repeating geometric design typical of the finest weavings from this area.
A striking, wide main border frames the composition, utilizing a rare teal-blue secondary ground color. Within the cartouches and panels of this border, highly abstracted animal and bird figures are depicted, reflecting the deep cultural history of Iranian / Persian rugs and the weaver’s personal artistic expression.
Retaining its original, impressive scale, this piece functions perfectly as a foundational element in a grand interior. The substantial wool pile and the complex, saturated palette ensure that this room size rug maintains a commanding presence, offering both historical integrity and enduring visual appeal.
Condition: Good.
