Antique Senneh Square Room Size Wool Dark Rug, Country of Origin: Iran / Persia, Circa Date: 1890s. This exceptional late 19th-century weaving hails from the Kurdish region, renowned for producing some of the finest, most tightly knotted Iranian / Persian rugs. The sophisticated palette features a deep indigo field contrasted by rich rust and terracotta tones, defining its status as a true piece of history.
The central field is dominated by a meticulous, repeating pattern—a characteristic known as an allover design. Unlike medallion carpets, this dense, continuous motif ensures visual balance across the entire surface, drawing the eye into the intricate detail work typical of Senneh craftsmanship. The quality of the wool and the tight weave contribute significantly to the rug’s remarkable preservation.
While the overall impression is one of depth and darkness, careful inspection reveals subtle shifts in hue, achieved through natural dyes. The primary colors lean toward deep navy and oxidized reds, but the secondary accents provide warmth, placing this piece within the desirable category of earth tone color rugs. Its generous square dimensions classify it perfectly as a room size rug, ideal for anchoring a formal living space or library.
The complex, multi-layered border system frames the field with stylized palmettes and meandering vines set against a dark blue ground, showcasing the weaver’s artistic mastery. This square piece represents a superb example of late Qajar-era textile art, offering collectors an opportunity to acquire a genuinely rare and high-quality antique rug with documented provenance and exceptional aesthetic appeal.
