Antique American Hooked Square Rug Small Scatter Size Wool Purple, Circa Date: 1890s. This charming example of an American Hooked Rug captures the domestic artistry popular in the late 19th century. Its dense, hand-hooked construction provides a robust texture, while the practical small scatter size and square shape make it a versatile accent piece, perfectly suited for an entryway or bedside placement.
The central design features a pale, subtly shaded cartouche, creating an illusion of depth against the deeply saturated field. This central element is elegantly framed by a scrolling vine and stylized blossoms, executed in a palette of soft blues, pinks, and ochre. The overall composition of this square rug aligns with the aesthetic principles found in traditional floral rugs of the Victorian era.
A defining characteristic of this piece is the striking field color. The rich, almost regal purple color provides a dramatic and unusual backdrop for the lighter, pastel elements of the surrounding border. This masterful handling of contrast elevates the square rug beyond simple folk art into a sophisticated decorative statement.
As a tangible piece of textile history, this rug offers more than just decoration; it represents a unique chapter in American craft tradition, where discarded materials were transformed into enduring works of art. It is a highly collectible and well-preserved example among the finest antique rugs available today.
