A monumental 19th-century Persian Ziegler Sultanabad carpet, woven around 1880 and measuring approximately 518.3 × 731.5 cm (about 17’0″ × 24’0″). At this scale, the piece is suited to formal ballrooms, large gallery spaces, hotel reception floors, and the largest residential rooms — a true gallery-format antique.
The composition pairs a sky-blue field with a coral-red border — an unusually cool palette for a Sultanabad of this era and a key part of what made Ziegler-commissioned carpets so prized in late-Victorian interiors. The Manchester firm Ziegler & Co. began commissioning looms in Sultanabad in the 1880s specifically to produce oversized carpets in proportions and palettes calibrated to European and American taste, and these “Ziegler Sultanabads” are now among the most collectible large-format antique Persian decorative carpets.
