Antique Art Deco Chinese Floral Red 1920s Rug, Circa Date: 1920s. This exceptional piece perfectly captures the transitional design era of the 1920s, where traditional Chinese symbolism was reinterpreted through the streamlined lens of Art Deco. It remains a superb example among truly fine antique rugs of the early 20th century.
The expansive field is saturated in a deep, vibrant red. This striking red color provides a powerful contrast, allowing the sparse, naturalistic ornamentation to achieve maximum visual impact. The saturation and depth of the wool pile speak to the quality of the materials and dyeing techniques employed.
The composition is defined by its elegant negative space, a hallmark of the Art Deco influence on Chinese weaving. Four stylized vases, overflowing with flowering branches and attended by delicate butterflies, anchor the corners. These motifs are framed by subtle geometric fretwork and a central, soft-hued floral wreath, creating a sophisticated balance between traditional symbolism and modernist restraint.
Beyond its aesthetic merit, this rug offers significant utility. Its substantial dimensions make it perfectly suited for placement as a room size centerpiece in a formal living area or grand dining room. It is a testament to enduring craftsmanship, providing a sophisticated foundation that bridges historical artistry with modern interior design needs.
