Hallway Runner Rugs (3.08ft x 17.03ft), Country of Origin: China, Circa Date: 1890s. This exceptional piece belongs to a distinguished collection of antique rugs, showcasing the sophisticated artistry of late 19th-century weaving from the Kansu region. The palette is dominated by a warm, oxidized Coral ground, providing a striking contrast to the intricate motifs.
The elongated dimensions of this textile confirm its function as a superb example of hallway runner rugs. Its narrow profile is perfectly suited for defining long corridors or adding a continuous line of color and texture to transitional spaces, maintaining visual interest throughout its substantial length. Given its size (3.08ft x 17.03ft), it is an ideal hallway runner.
Characteristic of Chinese rugs from this period, the field is populated by a charming array of symbolic objects, including various porcelain vases and vessels, intertwined with stylized peonies and flowering vines. These motifs are rendered in soft and contrasting tones, creating a balanced, rhythmic composition that speaks to classical Chinese decorative arts.
The design employs a graceful, repeating vertical structure, qualifying it as an elegant allover design rather than a medallion format. This continuous flow is contained by a complex border system featuring a traditional Greek key fretwork inner guard stripe, framed by a delicate outer band of scrolling floral elements, completing its highly refined aesthetic.
