Antique Kerman – Lavar Room Size Wool Red Rug, Circa Date: 1890s. This exceptional late 19th-century weaving exemplifies the technical mastery associated with Kerman rugs from the Lavar region of Persia. The dense wool pile and intricate knotting speak to the high standards of production maintained by the master workshops of the era.
The main field is dominated by a rich, saturated tone, best described as a deep, earthy red color. This vibrant ground provides a striking backdrop for the complex, repeating design. The composition utilizes a sophisticated allover pattern of stylized Cypress trees and flowering shrubs emerging from decorative vases, creating a mesmerizing garden-like tapestry.
Crafted to a generous room size dimension, this piece was intended to anchor a major reception space, demonstrating the owner’s prestige and taste. The border system is equally elaborate, featuring multiple guard stripes framing a broad main band filled with delicate palmettes and curvilinear vine work, typical of classical Persian decorative arts.
As a highly collectible example of late Qajar period artistry, this Lavar Kerman stands as a testament to enduring Persian textile traditions. Its superb condition, exceptional weave quality, and timeless aesthetic make it a significant addition to any collection of fine antique rugs.
