Antique Small Scatter Size Wool Blue Square Rug, Circa Date: 1890s. This exceptional late 19th-century weaving presents a dramatic and highly symbolic design, characteristic of Imperial Chinese textile arts. The central motif, a powerful, five-clawed dragon rendered in striking saffron and orange hues, establishes this square piece as a significant example among antique rugs.
The masterful use of color creates immediate visual depth. The field utilizes a saturated, near-midnight blue color, providing a perfect foil for the fiery dragon and the surrounding Ruyi cloud bands. This particular shade of indigo was highly prized in courtly textiles and remains a perennial favorite for collectors.
Surrounded by stylized auspicious symbols and floating clouds in pale ivory and lighter cerulean, the dragon is depicted mid-flight, embodying power and good fortune. The craftsmanship is evident in the finely executed knotting and the high-quality wool pile, which retains excellent texture and definition despite its considerable age.
Measuring in a highly desirable small square format, this rug serves beautifully as an accent piece or wall hanging. Its dimensions make it an ideal small scatter size rug, capable of introducing a profound historical statement into a confined space, such as an entryway or beside a hearth.
Condition: Good.
