Antique Chinese Chinese – Peking Allover Floral Blue 1920s Rug, Circa Date: 1920s. This exceptional piece from the 1920s Peking weaving tradition presents a dramatic narrative landscape set against a profound indigo ground. The density of the design and the rich color palette elevate this far beyond typical decorative pieces, establishing it as a masterpiece among antique rugs.
The field is teeming with life, depicting a classical Chinese garden scene where stylized trees and craggy, abstracted rock formations provide perches for a multitude of avian figures. Cranes, pheasants, and small songbirds are rendered in soft camel and ivory tones, contrasting beautifully with the deep blue color rugs background, which dominates the composition and lends it striking formality.
The elaborate border system frames the central tableau with meticulous precision. It features multiple guards incorporating geometric fretwork, stylized floral sprays, and repeating cartouches that enclose miniature landscape vignettes. This layering technique emphasizes the rug’s depth and its adherence to high imperial design standards, even during the Republican era.
Given its substantial dimensions, this Peking masterpiece functions perfectly as a magnificent room size rugs anchor for a formal dining room or grand salon. Its artistic merit and historical provenance ensure that it remains a sophisticated and enduring statement of early 20th-century Chinese textile artistry.
