A late 19th-century West Persian Kurdish Jaf carpet from around 1890, measuring approximately 91.7 × 274.4 cm (about 3’0″ × 9’0″). Per the original ARS catalog notes, this piece shows the freer hand of certain Jaf-tribe weavers — the classic lozenges contract, swell, lean, and stretch; hooks get added; quartered motives are tossed in; and the whole effect is totally engaging. The ivory border with erratic crosses is a Jaf original.
The Jaf are a Kurdish tribal group; their tribal hand-knotted carpets are recognized for their distinctive lozenge vocabularies and saturated natural-dye palettes.
Hand-knotted wool. Authentic one-of-a-kind antique tribal carpet. A welcome addition to any collection focusing on nomadic rug art.
