Antique American Blue Square Quilt: a quilt made in the United States, 76 x 87 inches (6’4″ x 7’3″). It is pieced from fabric and quilted through to a backing, not knotted or woven like a rug. Quilts like this were made as bed coverings; today they are hung as textile art or used as a throw or bed topper. Because it is a textile, we do not recommend it for use on the floor.
This unique textile piece, dating from the early 20th century, presents a striking monochromatic study in texture within its elegant square format. The deeply saturated indigo hue dominates the field, offering a powerful foundation for any sophisticated interior. This vibrant shade of blue color textiles is particularly effective in highlighting the intricate surface detail.
Distinguished by its unusual construction, this example belongs to the rare category of quilt style textiles, characterized by needlework that creates a dimensional, tactile surface. The subtle variation in light across the raised stitching provides a dynamic visual element, preventing the solid color field from feeling flat.
The design employs an expansive, abstract pattern that covers the entire field, establishing a true allover quilt pattern. Circular and curvilinear motifs are meticulously outlined through the needlework, creating a mesmerizing, web-like structure.
It offers a modern aesthetic while retaining the inherent quality and craftsmanship of the period.
Condition: Good.
