Antique Multicolor Wool 1920s American Hooked Small Square Scatter Rug, Circa Date: 1920s. This charming piece exemplifies the folk art tradition inherent in the American Hooked Rug style, offering a distinctive, textural departure from more formal woven textiles and representing a unique category within our collection of antique rugs.
The design of this square scatter rug is rigorously structured, built upon a tessellated grid featuring alternating solid-color octagonal blocks and square patches filled with vertical stripes. The resulting strong, repeating layout places this piece firmly within the tradition of sophisticated geometric rugs, despite its humble, resourceful construction technique.
Crafted from varied wool strips, the looped pile technique creates a highly textural, dense surface quality. The palette is surprisingly rich, blending grounding neutrals—creams, tans, and deep browns—with vivid, saturated stripes of crimson, purple, and cerulean, resulting in a striking example of multicolor jewel tone rugs.
Measuring in a compact square format, this piece is an ideal small square scatter size rug. Its dimensions make it exceptionally versatile, providing a burst of vintage color and texture suitable for an entryway, a bedside accent, or a sophisticated layer in a powder room.
