Vintage Aubusson in the grand Empire style. A great round medallion with a sunburst rosette at its centre is ringed by interlaced flower garlands on ivory. Dark green corners carry gold scrolling acanthus, the side panels hold palmettes and lozenges, and gold borders of small white flowers and leaf chains frame the whole carpet. A formal, architectural design in the manner of the French Savonnerie carpets.
Hand woven in China, circa 1980. Hand woven in the Aubusson tapestry technique: a flat weave made entirely by hand, colour by colour, the same way carpets were woven in Aubusson, France in the 18th century. 100% wool, with no pile and no latex. Carpets from this workshop carry a label stating they use more than sixty shades of wool and take a team of designers and weavers over a year to complete.
Brand new and never used, yet vintage: it was woven decades ago and is no longer in production. Rare and one of a kind. Hand woven Aubussons of this size and detail are seldom offered. We have exactly one, and when it sells it cannot be reordered.
Room size 9′ x 12′ (actual size 9’1 x 12’2). Flat and thin, so doors clear it and chairs slide easily, which makes it a natural choice under a dining table, in a bedroom or in a formal living room. Light enough to hang as a tapestry.
Bound and finished by hand. Use a rug pad to keep it in place, vacuum without a beater bar, and have it professionally cleaned. Ships rolled from our Deer Park, New York warehouse.
