Antique Malayer Small Scatter Size Wool Brown Rug, Circa Date: 1930s. This exceptional West Persian weaving exemplifies the robust craftsmanship characteristic of the Malayer region. Its tightly knotted wool pile and enduring palette mark it as a desirable piece among antique rugs of the early 20th century.
The field presents a striking, almost black-coffee brown earth-tone color that provides a dramatic backdrop for the repeating boteh motif. These stylized paisley elements are rendered in alternating rows of soft cream, muted terracotta, and deep indigo blue, creating a sense of rhythmic movement across the central panel.
Classified as a small scatter size rug, this piece offers versatility for placement in hallways, beside furniture, or as an accent in a refined study. The main border, featuring lush, stylized floral sprays set against a light ground, provides a sophisticated contrast to the intensity of the central field.
The structure of the design, where the motifs repeat continuously without a central medallion, defines it as an allover pattern, a style often favored for its visual stability and ability to anchor a room. This Malayer rug is a testament to the enduring artistry and subtle complexity found in village weavings from this period.
