Savonnerie Rugs
Savonnerie carpets represent the pinnacle of French luxury, originally produced exclusively for the Bourbon kings. These rugs are characterized by their deep, plush pile and “Grand Style” neoclassical designs—incorporating royal emblems, architectural moldings, and 3D-effect floral garlands.
An antique French Savonnerie is a formal masterpiece, intended to harmonize with gilded furniture and ornate ceilings. They remain the gold standard for creating a regal, “palatial” atmosphere in high-end interiors.
Savonnerie rugs embody the height of French court luxury, originally commissioned for royal palaces and grand architectural spaces. Characterized by their opulent thick piles, stately Neoclassical designs, and rich floral elements, these pieces set the standard for European weaving traditions; discover more about the heritage of historic French rugs and learn how they relate to flat-woven pieces like the Aubusson style. Four measured facts about the antique Savonneries we hold are worth having before you browse. Format comes first because it governs everything else: across the 25 in stock the median piece covers 273 square feet against 59.5 for our antique inventory, the median long side is 19.5 feet against 10.0, and 16 of the 25 are larger than 250 square feet, a band that holds 4.4 percent of everything else we stock. Second, that scale is most of what the price reflects. The median asking price is $40,500 against $9,800 across our antiques, which reads as four times the market, but measured by the square foot the group runs $199 against $167, and matched on area the premium only becomes real above about 200 square feet. Third, this is not purely a French group: 18 carry France as the recorded origin, 3 Spain, 3 Austria and 1 Romania, and those three Austrian carpets are three of only four Austrian antique rugs on the site. Fourth, it reaches further back than any other type we have measured, with 6 of the 25 dated before 1830 against 2.3 percent of our other antiques. Our antique Savonnerie rug buying and identification guide sets out the price per square foot bands with the number of pieces in each, the construction test that separates a Savonnerie from an Aubusson, and what our own records get wrong on this type.
