This Antique Oushak Turkish Knotted Square Rug, dating to the 1880s, is a magnificent example of late 19th-century Turkish weaving. It showcases the refined aesthetic that made Oushak carpets highly sought after by Western designers. Its grand scale and expertly balanced design place it among the most compelling antique rugs available today, offering both historical provenance and enduring decorative appeal.
The field of this square carpet presents a beautifully mellowed palette dominated by soft, creamy tones, establishing a foundation of quiet elegance. The subtle shift in the central area towards a pale celadon green adds depth without disrupting the overall tranquility of the composition. This gentle coloration is characteristic of the finest examples, making it an exceptional choice for those seeking ivory and beige rugs that radiate warmth.
Throughout the main field, repeating stylized palmettes and delicate botanical sprays are rendered in muted earth tones, creating a sense of structured yet organic movement. The wide primary border frames the square composition with an elaborate, continuous vine scroll featuring blossoms and leaves, confirming its place among the most decorative floral rugs of the period.
Woven with luxurious wool and exhibiting a sublime patina achieved through over a century of careful preservation, this piece is designed to anchor a major living space. Its substantial dimensions allow it to serve as the defining element in a sophisticated interior design scheme, classifying it as a true room-size rug in a rare square format with unparalleled historical depth.
