Blue 1920s Wool Hand Knotted Pile Rectangle Geometric Medallion Antique Rug, Circa Date: 1920s. This exceptional hand-knotted wool pile piece, dating to the 1920s, showcases the sophisticated artistry of early 20th-century Chinese weaving. It is a fine example of antique rugs that blend traditional iconography with refined color palettes.
The palette is restrained yet impactful, utilizing deep shades of indigo and cerulean against a soft, creamy field. The striking use of blue color rugs highlights the complex symbolic imagery, which includes scholarly objects, stylized lanterns, and architectural elements, creating a narrative field design.
Given its narrow, rectangular format, this piece functions perfectly as a runner or a scatter rug. Its dimensions make it an ideal selection among Small Scatter Size Rugs (3.02ft x 6ft), offering a concentrated burst of historical color and texture suitable for hallways or intimate studies where space is at a premium.
While the internal motifs are figurative, the overall composition is strictly balanced and structured, defined by a strong central medallion and layered borders featuring Greek key and fretwork patterns. This emphasis on structure places it firmly within the category of geometric rugs, demonstrating the era’s appreciation for ordered design principles and masterful knotting.
Condition: Good.
