Antique Art Deco Chinese Floral Black 1920s Rug, Circa Date: 1920s. This exceptional piece captures the dramatic fusion of traditional Chinese iconography with the bold aesthetic of the Art Deco era. Its striking design and unusual shape distinguish it among antique rugs of the period, representing a high point in early 20th-century textile production.
The field is dominated by a profound, velvety black, providing a powerful contrast that emphasizes the stylized botanical elements. This sophisticated use of a deep, saturated ground is characteristic of high-end Art Deco production and places it among the most sought-after black color rugs in our collection.
A cascade of bamboo stalks and delicate, stylized blossoms sweeps across the field, rendered in subtle tones of ochre, teal, and soft coral. The composition is deliberately asymmetrical, utilizing the negative space of the oval format to enhance the feeling of movement and organic, natural growth, a hallmark of the Chinoiserie style.
The unusual oval shape elevates this textile from a simple floor covering to a statement piece of decorative art. While its dimensions qualify it as one of our exceptional room size rugs, its visual impact is far greater, offering a sophisticated and unique foundation for a discerning interior design scheme.
