Antique American Hooked Rug American Brown 1935, Circa Date: 1935. This exceptional example of square American Hooked Rugs captures the robust folk artistry prevalent in the mid-1930s. Its dense, looped texture provides a tactile depth that distinguishes these domestic creations from their woven counterparts.
The composition features a bold, centrally placed bouquet of stylized blossoms, characteristic of floral rugs from the period. Within its square format, the large, creamy petals and deep magenta accents contrast sharply with the muted field, highlighting the maker’s skill in translating natural forms into a striking, textural medium.
The field color is a rich, nearly black tone that grounds the vibrant central motif. While the title suggests brown, the overall effect is a deep, earthy palette, placing it firmly within the category of brown earth tone color rugs. A stepped, geometric border in bright cobalt blue and coral provides a surprising, modern frame for the traditional subject matter.
Given its intimate dimensions, this square piece functions perfectly as one of the highly desirable small scatter size rugs, ideal for an entryway or bedside placement. As a carefully preserved example of early 20th-century craftsmanship, it represents a valuable addition to any collection of antique rugs, showcasing enduring American textile heritage.
