Antique Peking Room Size Wool Blue Rug, Circa Date: 1920s. This magnificent example of early 20th-century Chinese weaving presents a striking contrast of color and texture. The expansive central field is rendered in a rich, saturated indigo, providing a dramatic backdrop for the delicate design elements. This specific shade of blue color is characteristic of the finest Peking production of the era.
The design employs an elegant, minimalist approach, featuring scattered floral sprays and vines that float across the dark ground. The main border offers a dramatic counterpoint, utilizing a wide band of luminous gold-ochre wool, densely populated with stylized blossoms and trailing foliage. This piece represents a sophisticated evolution of oriental rug aesthetics during the Republican period.
Woven entirely from high-quality wool, the pile retains a luxurious density, indicative of its excellent preservation over the last century. Its substantial dimensions classify it as a true room size rug, making it an ideal anchor piece for a formal dining area or a grand living room, offering both historical gravitas and exceptional comfort underfoot.
Dating to the 1920s, this rug captures the transitional style of Chinese weaving, blending ancient symbolism with the emerging Western Art Deco sensibility. Such pieces are highly sought after by collectors seeking authentic antique rugs that possess both artistic merit and enduring quality.
