Antique Peking Chinese Allover Ivory 1880s Rug, Circa Date: 1880s. This exceptional example of Chinese weaving captures the refined aesthetic of late 19th-century Peking production. The restrained palette and open field exemplify the high quality expected from antique rugs of this period, demonstrating a masterful balance between traditional symbolism and contemporary taste.
The composition features a beautifully aged, expansive ivory field that provides a striking contrast to the deep indigo and cobalt blue motifs. Unlike the dense patterning often found in earlier Chinese works, this piece utilizes negative space to highlight the stylized, dynamic figures scattered across the surface, lending the textile a remarkable sense of lightness and movement.
The central design is dominated by a playful, allover arrangement of mythical beasts. These energetic figures, commonly known as foo Dogs, are rendered in bold blue outlines, symbolizing protection and prosperity within traditional Chinese iconography. The surrounding elements include subtle cloud bands and geometric accents that enhance the overall sense of depth and narrative.
Framed by a classic key-fret border and a secondary guard band featuring floral medallions, the structure remains formal despite the whimsical nature of the field design. Its generous dimensions classify it as a true room size rug, making it a commanding centerpiece suitable for sophisticated interiors seeking a touch of historic grandeur and authenticity.
Condition: Good.
