Antique Ningxia Small Square Wool Yellow Rug, Circa Date: 1850s. This remarkable piece is a classic example of Chinese weaving from the mid-19th century, representing the refined aesthetic often found in antique rugs of this provenance. The strong, saturated color palette and the deliberate, geometric design elements are highly characteristic of the Ningxia region during this period.
The primary field color is a rich, burnished yellow, providing a luminous backdrop for the central medallion and border motifs. This specific shade of yellow, achieved through natural dyes, defines the rug’s overall warmth and places it among desirable yellow color rugs. The contrast with the deep indigo blue creates visual depth, highlighting the sophisticated use of negative space.
The central design features a stepped, square medallion enclosing a circular motif composed of intricate, stylized key patterns (meander borders). The corners echo this geometric precision, utilizing traditional Chinese fretwork that emphasizes symmetry and balance, typical of court-influenced Ningxia production.
Woven in a dense, durable wool pile, this rug’s utility is enhanced by its dimensions. This small square scatter size rug makes it exceptionally versatile for use in hallways, bedside placements, or as an accent piece to highlight a specific area of fine flooring, offering a concentrated dose of historical artistry.
