Antique Chinese Chinese – Peking Blue 1900s Rug, Circa Date: 1900s. This exquisite example of early 20th-century Chinese weaving showcases the classic Peking style, defined by its open composition and striking color contrast. The field is saturated with a rich, deep indigo, offering a magnificent foundation typical of the finest blue color rugs produced during this era.
The design utilizes a highly refined, yet scattered, arrangement of traditional motifs across the expansive field. Stylized vases, teapots, and floral elements are rendered in soft shades of light blue and white, floating gracefully against the dark ground. The repeating, non-centralized placement of these elements creates a sophisticated allover rugs effect, ensuring visual harmony and balance throughout the composition.
This piece represents the finest tradition of Chinese weaving, standing as a superb example among antique rugs of the period. The iconography is distinctly auspicious, featuring symbols of longevity and prosperity, including bamboo and mythical birds detailed within the corner spandrels. The use of negative space is masterful, allowing each motif to be appreciated individually.
Framing the deep indigo field is a broad, contrasting border rendered in pale beige and tan, adorned with delicate landscape vignettes and floral sprays. The substantial dimensions of this textile make it an ideal choice for large reception areas, positioning it perfectly within the category of room size rugs, offering both historical resonance and enduring elegance.
