Antique Art Deco Large Room Size Wool Yellow Rug, Country of Origin: China, Circa Date: 1920s. This exceptional example of early 20th-century weaving represents the height of the Art Deco movement as interpreted by Chinese rugs masters. Its imposing scale and luxurious wool pile make it a significant addition to any collection of antique rugs.
The commanding central field is rendered in a burnished, luminous yellow color, providing a sophisticated warmth that defines the rug’s character. This expansive, uncluttered space is characteristic of the period’s modernist aesthetic, allowing the rich texture of the wool to take precedence over dense pattern work. The subtle abrash across the field adds depth and movement, enhancing its overall visual complexity.
A dramatic, deep plum border frames the yellow field, separated by a slender inner guard border of midnight blue. The outer border is intricately decorated with stylized branches and delicate blossoms, showcasing traditional floral motifs simplified and enlarged for the Art Deco taste. These naturalistic elements are rendered with a precision that speaks to the quality of the craftsmanship inherent in pieces from this era.
Measuring as a true room size rug, this piece is designed to anchor a major living space or dining area, providing a foundation of historic elegance and vibrant color. The combination of saturated hues and refined, yet bold, design ensures that this Art Deco masterpiece retains its relevance and powerful visual impact nearly a century after its creation.
