Antique American 1920s Multicolor Quilt: a quilt made in the United States, 67 x 87 inches (5’7″ x 7’3″). It is pieced from fabric and quilted through to a backing, not knotted or woven like a rug. Quilts like this were made as bed coverings; today they are hung as textile art or used as a throw or bed topper. Because it is a textile, we do not recommend it for use on the floor.
The design is characterized by its bold, minimalist structure, featuring a deep, near-black field framed by two highly saturated blue bands. This minimalist aesthetic relies on strong lines and high contrast, placing it firmly within the tradition of geometric textiles. Furthermore, the distinctive surface texture and construction emulate the look of a traditional textile quilt, showcasing an unusual and highly collectible style.
While restrained in its composition, the palette utilizes powerful chromatic contrast. The deep, inky ground provides a dramatic foil for the electric blue borders, creating a vibrant visual tension. This sophisticated use of contrasting hues elevates the piece into the category of multicolor jewel tone textiles, demonstrating an advanced approach to color blocking popular during the Art Deco era.
