Antique Chinese – Art Deco Room Size Wool Blue Rug, Circa Date: 1920s. This exceptional example of early 20th-century weaving captures the dramatic shift in design aesthetics, blending traditional Eastern motifs with Western Art Deco sensibilities. It belongs to a celebrated tradition of antique rugs that defined the luxury market of the interwar period.
The composition is defined by its saturated field, a profound, almost midnight blue color rugs that provides a theatrical backdrop for the elaborate, naturalistic elements. The stark contrast between the deep indigo center and the plush, wine-red outer border creates a sense of luxurious enclosure, amplifying the visual depth of the design.
Stylized aquatic flora—including lotus blossoms, reeds, and trailing vines—cascade into the central void, rendered in a palette of soft jade, rose, and ochre. The design eschews traditional symmetry, favoring an organic, flowing arrangement characteristic of the period’s fascination with nature and streamlined form.
Woven in a substantial room size rugs format, this piece is designed to anchor a sophisticated interior space, providing both scale and visual drama. The high-quality wool pile retains its rich texture and depth, ensuring that this Chinese Art Deco masterpiece remains a vibrant statement of luxury and historical design integrity.
