A monumental 19th-century West Persian Bijar Garrus carpet from around 1870, measuring approximately 244.1 × 701.2 cm (about 8’0″ × 23’0″). The composition pairs a deep dark-blue field with a burnt-rust border, in the disciplined large-scale Garrus vocabulary characteristic of the highest tier of Bijar production.
Bijar is a town in the Kurdish region of northwestern Persia (now Iran), historically known for the densely-woven “iron carpets of Persia.” “Garrus” refers to a particularly disciplined, large-scale design vocabulary of arabesque and curvilinear motifs.
