A 19th-century French Aubusson carpet from the Napoleon III period, woven around 1870 and measuring approximately 457.4 × 670.6 cm (about 15’0″ × 22’0″). Per the original ARS catalog notes, this exuberant piece features a wide ivory border with floral corner ovals and giant multi-flower bouquets at the midpoints of the sides, with an elaborate central cartouche burgeoning with a garden’s worth of posies. As with most mid-19th-century Aubussons, the field/border distinction is more violated than observed.

Aubusson is a town in central France with a flat-weave carpet tradition stretching back to the 17th century.

Hand-woven wool flat-weave. Authentic one-of-a-kind antique.
