A striking antique earth-toned Chinese Art Deco, hand-knotted in wool in China around 1920. This one-of-a-kind piece showcases a geometric composition across an earth-toned palette, and measures 2’5″ x 11’7″.
Chinese Art Deco rugs emerged in the 1920s and 1930s, when weavers in Tianjin – most famously in the workshops associated with Walter Nichols – paired traditional Chinese craft with the bold, asymmetrical, modern aesthetic of the Art Deco movement. The result is a distinctive look: spacious fields, oversized blossoms and a fresh, painterly use of color.
Its long, narrow proportions are ideal for a hallway, stair landing or galley kitchen. Its earth tones ground a space and pair naturally with greenery and wood. Hand-knotted from durable wool, it is made to be lived with and handed down.
