Ukraine Rugs
Ukrainian carpet weaving is far less known outside the region than the Persian and Caucasian traditions, and surviving antique pieces are correspondingly scarce. The weaving sits at a crossroads: it borrows the floral vocabulary of Central European decorative carpets while keeping the structure and wool handling of the wider Eastern weaving world, and the result resembles neither neatly. Palettes are characteristically earthy and subdued, built on browns, greens and soft reds rather than the clear primaries of Caucasian village work, which gives these carpets an unusually quiet presence for their size. Pieces are knotted in wool. Because so little nineteenth-century Ukrainian weaving reached the Western market, examples in good condition are of real interest to collectors of European folk textiles as well as to carpet specialists.
