A mid-19th-century Ukrainian pile carpet from around 1860, measuring approximately 213.4 × 274.4 cm (about 7’0″ × 9’0″). The composition is a chocolate-brown field with a floral roses design, framed by a moss-green border — a Eastern European folk-textile color register characteristic of the period.
Ukrainian pile carpets of this period combined Russian, Ottoman, and central European decorative vocabularies, with floral and naturalistic designs that distinguish them from the more abstract patterns of related Bessarabian flat-weaves.
Hand-knotted wool. Authentic one-of-a-kind antique.
