Antique Large Khotan East Turkestan Knotted Rug, Circa Date: 1930s. This exceptional example of an East Turkestan weaving exhibits the refined synthesis of Chinese imperial design and Central Asian nomadic structure. Khotan pieces from this period are highly sought after by collectors of antique rugs for their unique palette and sophisticated, yet understated, compositions.
The colorway is particularly appealing, featuring a luminous field of soft beige and taupe, accented by rich ochre and deep brown outlines. The use of natural dyes has resulted in a harmonious blend of muted tones, placing this piece among the most desirable light earthy color rugs available today. The subtle abrash across the field adds depth and movement to the expansive surface, reflecting the hand-knotted nature of the textile.
The design features a series of large, interconnected square medallions, each containing intricate geometric and stylized floral rugs motifs. These detailed elements contrast beautifully with the relatively open ground, framed by a complex border system composed of multiple guard stripes utilizing classic East Turkestan fretwork and repeating flower heads.
Given its substantial dimensions, this Khotan weaving is perfectly scaled for grand reception rooms or expansive living areas. It functions superbly as one of the finest room size rugs we currently offer, providing a foundational layer of history and understated elegance that complements both traditional and contemporary interior design schemes.
