Antique American Multicolor 1920s Square Quilt: a quilt made in the United States, 69 x 69 inches (5’9″ x 5’9″). It is pieced from fabric and quilted through to a backing, not knotted or woven like a rug. Quilts like this were made as bed coverings; today they are hung as textile art or used as a throw or bed topper. Because it is a textile, we do not recommend it for use on the floor.
Its construction utilizes a “crazy quilt” methodology, blending utility with sophisticated design in a distinct square format.
The composition is defined by an intricate network of irregularly shaped fabric fragments, creating a dynamic, non-repeating field of geometric textiles. These patches incorporate diverse materials—tweeds, stripes, and solids—in a rich, subdued palette of olive, charcoal, rust, and slate blue, held together by striking red blanket stitching. The square proportions of the piece enhance the balance of its complex patchwork.
A dramatic central medallion, rendered in solid red, features a black silhouette of a walking figure, providing an unexpected narrative focus within the overall design. The complex interplay of hues establishes this as a truly exceptional example of multicolor jewel tone textiles, where the depth of color is derived from the varied textures of the repurposed cloth.
This highly textural square piece captures the spirit of resourceful American textile artistry of the era.
Condition: Good.
