Antique American Ivory 1935 Square Quilt: a quilt made in the United States, 80 x 81 inches (6’8″ x 6’9″). It is pieced from fabric and quilted through to a backing, not knotted or woven like a rug. Quilts like this were made as bed coverings; today they are hung as textile art or used as a throw or bed topper. Because it is a textile, we do not recommend it for use on the floor.
This exceptional piece is a rare example of early 20th-century textile art, bridging the gap between traditional folk craft and sophisticated modern design.
The design is characterized by a striking interplay of cool blue and a warm, aged ivory color field. The composition of this Square quilt utilizes nested squares and diamonds, creating a dynamic, centralized focus that draws the eye inward.
The bold, repetitive sawtooth borders and internal motifs exemplify pure geometric patterns, offering a powerful visual rhythm that is both elemental and refined.
The restrained palette and the precise execution of the stepped edges elevate this textile beyond mere utility, presenting it as a sophisticated, architectural statement suitable for contemporary interiors. Its historical context, Square shape, and graphic boldness ensure its status as a highly collectible item.
Condition: Good.
