Antique Peking Room Size Wool Coral Rug, Circa Date: 1900s. This exceptional Chinese textile represents the finest weaving traditions of the late Qing Dynasty, characterized by an open field and sophisticated coloration. It is a superb example of antique rugs that successfully bridged traditional court aesthetics with emerging Western decorative tastes.
The expansive, luminous field is rendered in a highly desirable shade of coral, providing a warm, yet restrained backdrop for the stylized motifs. This delicate hue contrasts sharply with the deep indigo or midnight blue used for the main border and the intricate corner spandrels, which feature gracefully scrolling vines and stylized peonies.
Measuring as a true room size rug, this piece offers significant coverage suitable for a formal dining room or grand salon. The central medallion, composed of scrolling vines and stylized blossoms, floats elegantly upon the open field, maintaining the airy composition typical of early 20th-century Peking production.
The complex border system frames the composition beautifully, featuring an outer guard stripe of solid dark blue, followed by a narrow inner band showcasing the classic greek Key running dog motif in pale gold and teal. The overall effect is one of balanced symmetry and quiet luxury, emphasizing negative space and expert craftsmanship.
