Antique Oversized Chinese – Peking Chinese Geometric Knotted Rug, Circa Date: 1900s. This magnificent example of early 20th-century Chinese weaving presents a sophisticated, dark field design characteristic of the Peking style, representing the finest tradition of antique rugs. The use of repeating circular medallions set against a deep indigo ground creates a powerful, architectural rhythm.
The dramatic contrast is achieved through a rich, nearly black field that allows the cream and tan geometric motifs to vividly emerge. Subtle accents of pale powder blue color rugs are integrated into the central elements of the medallions, providing a cool counterpoint to the overall warmth of the neutral tones.
Typical of high-quality Peking production, the rug features an exceptionally dense knot and a luxurious, plush pile. The complex main border frames the central design with stylized scrolling vines and mythological creatures rendered in contrasting light tones, demonstrating exceptional skill in execution and adherence to classical Chinese iconography.
The impressive scale of this piece makes it a commanding focal point suitable for grand interiors. As a large oversized big rug, its geometric precision and restrained palette ensure that this historic textile remains a timeless statement of refined elegance, ideal for placement in a formal drawing room or a vast library.
