Antique Chinese – Baotou Ivory 1920s Rug, Circa Date: 1920s. This exceptional Baotou scatter piece exemplifies the restrained elegance of early 20th-century Chinese weaving. The field is dominated by a rich, natural ivory tone, providing a stark, sophisticated canvas for the deep indigo motifs that define the composition.
The design employs a classic Chinese repertoire of auspicious objects—vases, censers, and scholar’s items—arranged symmetrically along the central axis. These highly stylized renderings are framed by an elaborate, tightly woven border that incorporates the Greek key motif, emphasizing the underlying geometric structure of the composition.
Baotou rugs from this period are highly sought after for their robust construction and graphic clarity, often utilizing only two or three colors to maximize visual impact. This particular piece represents the finest tradition of antique rugs from Northern China, demonstrating superior wool quality and knot density typical of workshop production.
While many Chinese carpets are room-sized, this format is perfectly suited as a small scatter size, ideal for hallways, bedside placement, or defining a specific architectural transition point. The enduring appeal of its blue-and-white palette ensures seamless integration into both traditional and contemporary design schemes.
