Antique Chinese Yellow Room Size Wool Rug, Country of Origin: China, Circa Date: 1920s. This magnificent example of early 20th-century weaving represents the high quality and bold aesthetic typical of antique rugs from this transitional period. The rich, saturated yellow field immediately captures the eye, setting a dramatic stage for the intricate design elements.
The deep yellow field is punctuated by two highly stylized, flowing vine motifs and a central medallion rendered in striking indigo and pale blue. This use of contrasting color highlights the sophisticated artistry inherent in Chinese rugs of the Republican era, moving away from the more reserved palettes of earlier Imperial styles.
A defining feature of this piece is its exceptionally wide and complex border system. The primary guard border employs a dense, interlocking fret pattern in deep blue and cream, a classic example of the complex geometric rugs tradition often found in East Asian textiles. This structure provides a powerful visual frame for the open, pictorial field.
Measuring generously, this piece is classified as a true room size rug, making it an ideal anchor for a formal living space or dining area where its vibrant yellow tones and historical presence can be fully appreciated. Its durable wool foundation and refined artistry ensure its continued status as a cherished heirloom.
