Antique Chinese – Pillar Carpet Chinese Knotted Rug, Country of Origin: China, Circa Date: 1880s. This exceptional example of late Qing Dynasty weaving is a rare pillar carpet, designed specifically to wrap around a structural column in a temple or palace. Its vibrant coral ground and striking iconography immediately distinguish it among antique rugs.

The field is dominated by a powerful, five-clawed Imperial dragon rendered in deep indigo and light blue, soaring amidst stylized ruyi clouds. This motif symbolizes imperial authority and protection, a common and highly revered element within Chinese rugs of this period. The long, narrow format necessitates a vertical, sequential arrangement of these powerful symbols.

Unlike typical floor coverings, the pillar carpet format is inherently vertical, making it a unique decorative object rather than a traditional area rug. Although its dimensions might align technically with small scatter size rugs, its function was entirely architectural and ceremonial. The palette is expertly balanced, utilizing a sophisticated interplay of salmon pink, navy blue, and cream accents.

The base of the composition features a dramatic, stepped mountain or wave pattern—the Lishui border—signifying the stability of the earth and the cosmic ocean. While the vertical orientation is paramount, the density of the motifs ensures that the design maintains a rich, complex texture, avoiding the simplicity often associated with a non-allover design. This piece is a testament to the technical skill of late 19th-century Chinese weavers.
