Antique Allover Floral Hand Knotted Square Yellow Rug, Circa Date: 1850s. This exceptional 19th-century textile features a dynamic, repeating pattern across its square surface, placing it firmly within the category of allover rugs.
The expansive central ground is dominated by a brilliant, saturated yellow, making it a standout piece among yellow rugs. Against this luminous backdrop, stylized peony blossoms, rendered in soft rose and cream, appear to float, interspersed with dark, almost black, stylized leaves that provide sharp visual punctuation.
A striking contrast is achieved through the complex border system. The inner frame is a crisp, solid blue line, while the wide outer border employs a dramatic, stepped, and wavy striped motif. This unusual composition uses undulating bands of cream, pink, blue, and ochre, providing a vibrant, almost kinetic frame for the central serenity, a testament to the enduring artistry of antique rugs.
The substantial square dimensions of this piece confirm its original intent as one of the grand room size rugs, designed to anchor a formal interior space. Its enduring quality and unique aesthetic make it a remarkable collector’s item, offering both historical depth and sophisticated decorative appeal.
