A striking antique Chinese Art Deco pictorial carpet, hand-knotted in wool in China around 1920 and measuring approximately 12′ × 14′ (366 × 427 cm). A serene garden scene unfolds across an emerald-green field — a flowering rose arch, slender trees, blossoming borders and a slim gold crescent moon — all framed by a deep raspberry-red border.

Chinese Art Deco rugs emerged in the 1920s and 1930s, when weavers in Tianjin (most famously in the workshops associated with Walter Nichols) paired traditional Chinese craft with the bold, pictorial, modern aesthetic of the Art Deco movement. Pictorial garden designs like this one are among the most sought-after expressions of the style.

Its generous, oversized scale makes a statement in a great room, primary suite, or open-plan living space, while the green ground and warm floral accents bring color and depth to neutral and wood-toned interiors. Hand-knotted from durable wool, it is made to be lived with and handed down.
