Antique Chinese Art Deco Round Geometric Hand Knotted Pile Yellow Rug, Country of Origin: China, Circa Date: 1920s. This exceptional piece from the early Republican era represents the pinnacle of 20th-century Chinese rugs production, blending traditional Eastern iconography with the bold aesthetic demands of the West. As a highly collectible example of antique rugs, its vibrant palette and unique composition distinguish it immediately.
Executed in a rare round format, the rug presents a stylized landscape scene featuring a towering pagoda, a small fishing boat upon the water, and rugged, colorful mountains. The dominant field color is a rich, saturated yellow, dramatically framed by a wide, solid dark border. This striking round format, often used for accent pieces, classifies it perfectly within the Small Scatter Size Rugs (4.06ft x 4.1ft) category, ideal for intimate spaces.
The design eschews naturalistic detail in favor of graphic simplification, a hallmark of the Art Deco movement that flourished internationally during the 1920s. The use of strong, contrasting accents against the intense yellow field highlights the modern sensibility of the design. This specific aesthetic is definitive of Chinese Art Deco rugs, which revolutionized the global market for round rugs.
Hand-knotted with a dense, luxurious wool pile, the technical quality of the weaving is superb, ensuring durability and depth of color. While the subject is pictorial, the abstracted forms of the architecture and landscape elements rely heavily on clean lines and structured shapes, demonstrating an underlying commitment to geometric rugs principles, making this round rug a sophisticated and enduring statement piece.
